Julie attended the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada (now OCAD University) where she studied printmaking, photography, illustration and metalsmithing. This interdisciplinary focus guided her to mixed media art in an attempt to combine these different disciplines in a coherent body of work.
For 20 years, Julie has been making collage and assemblage work often featuring vintage photos, finding that these, in of themselves, evoke imagined histories and feelings of nostalgia.
As she puts it: "Their serious and stern faces provide an ironic counterpoint to the humour and levity I try to inject into the work. Alternatively, my pieces make evident a playful fascination with all forms of iconography, creating alter-pieces for everyday life, making sacred of the mundane. More recently, I’ve been working on larger pieces that combine painting and collage on wood cradle boards." Julie lives in Toronto and works in a garage studio where she sometimes allows her husband, three children and little black dog Frida, to visit.
